Do Not Make These Mistakes About Depression 101 - Learn About Great Answers By: Nathan Knightley
There are many different forms of depression. Without realizing it or accepting it, many Americans suffer from some sort of depression. It is estimated that some 14 million Americans are affected by depression. It is also estimated that less than a third of those affected will ever seek treatment. Why is this the case? Maybe it's due to the fact that mental illness is considered a mental illness. No one wants to be classified with that label. People who suffered from mental illness were, at one time in history, ridiculed by society. When depression became apparent in people they were often sent away to clinics for the mentally ill. Fortunately times have changed. But the old stereotypes are still with us. This influences many Americans to keep their illness to themselves.

Many elements make up depression. It isn't easy to diagnose. Many things have to be considered such as genetics, biology and even outside influences. Drugs, alcohol and stress all can play a major role in the development of depression. These elements and more can lead to depression. Are there treatments for sufferers? There are many options for treatment and even cure, just as there are many causes for depression. These options are generally considered after evaluating the individual afflicted with depression

Many claim they have a cure for depression. Methods of treatment that are safe and that work to cure depression do exist. A doctor looks at a number of factors to determine which combination of options to apply. Is the treatment proven clinically to be effective for depression? If it is medication, herbal or prescription, does it have the proven amount of ingredients to induce a positive result? Have high quality control standards been used when accepting the method? Let's examine some of the more popular cures.

To treat many forms of depression doctors have typically prescribed a combination of drugs and psychotherapy. SSRI, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are prescribed to treat depression. One of the most popular, Prozac, was first used in the United States in 1988. Many others such as Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox have followed it. Case history shows all of these to be effective. These drugs have a lot of side effects. Becoming more common are natural treatments. St. Johns Wort extract is one of the more popular herbal cures on the market. To be effective it must contain around 3-5% hyperforin. It's success rate is similar to that of Prozac but with fewer side effects. As important as it is to find a cure-it is impossible to do so if those who suffer do not seek it. If you or someone you know suffers from depression seek medical attention immediately.
